Bob Bongard “Coming Home”
June 20 - July 16, 2011 at Tillie’s

Bob Bongard has been a fixture in Clinton Hill for most of his life. As the only child of vaudeville performers, he was given the gift of infinite creativity, first as a jazz musician, comic and singer, and now as a self-taught artist with a singular vision. Using primarily found objects, ink and pen, his work is truly of the street, and features a variety of subjects he knows and loves, including chorus girls, musicians, buildings and gardens. His detailed drawings from memory of famous buildings and local architecture balance obsessive detail with a human quality, garnering fans and collectors around the neighborhood.

Bob was recently hospitalized, and this benefit exhibition is being presented by a consortium of his local friends and admirers to honor his artistic achievements. All work will be cash and carry with all proceeds going directly to the artist.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, June 22, 7 - 9 p.m.

Inception (2010) - A Review

Yeah yeah yeah…I know. The last thing the world needs right now is another self-appointed critic offering her amateur opinion on Inception (for professional reviews, go here). Still, I feel the need to respond to diehard fanboys like my ~~idiot~~ opinionated brother (of Oscar Cops and PopMatters fame).

So everyone’s favorite method of criticism seems to be analogy; we’re all comparing this film to other paragons of recent cinema. While most of these comparisons are valid, I think we may need to look to a smaller screen for the best Inception doppelganger: Roman and Kent’s screenplay in Party Down (Season 2, Episode 5: “Steven Guttenberg’s Birthday”). Since I know I’m one of maybe 5 people who watched the show, lemme give you a quick synopsis.

Roman and Kent are two hopelessly geeky sci-fi nerds who write a screenplay that’s so bogged down in expository jargon not even Steve Guttenberg can appreciate it. After some helpful insight from the Gutte, the boys workshop their script and re-present it to the group, this time with much better results.

I’d like to argue that Inception is the first draft of their screenplay - all techno-babble bullshit and no heart. Nolan’s script could really benefit from a Guttenberg re-write…er, or at least some notes from the Party Down writers’ room.

Also, go watch Party Down. The show is twice as smart as Inception, and infinitely more enjoyable (no, not just because of the lovely Lizzy Caplan).
